I have about 55k in an ISA earning next to no interest - as has been the case for nearly a decade now. Anything better I can do with it without tying it up too much? (income is a bit variable at the moment)

Over the medium term, the affordable/social housing sector won't do anything but grow (for various, not just the flavour-of-the-month, reasons).

Also a bill has just passed (unopposed/undebated) through the lower chamber forcing local councils to "do more" to prevent people becoming homeless, which either means paying to keep them where they are, or finding them alternative accommodation.

Councils, who are already, they claim, cash-strapped will push to get as many people as they can out of (more) expensive accommodation and into cheaper (less desirable) places, so there's likely to be a surge in demand in BTL properties in what are traditionally hard-to-sell areas.

These areas could be anything from villages in the middle of nowhere with no shops/services through to town centres over-run with drug users, and, paradoxically, the homeless.

Yes. I have a large chink in a fund called Fundsmith. It makes me on average around 19% per year. I've put 100% max of my Isa in it for 5 years. Proper winner.
___

how do they post 19% a year- a cursory look at their holdings show the usual equities suspects- what are they doing that others arent!?

Not really enough for BTL is it?

Risk free has got to be Premium Bonds

Buy-to-let's still got to be the fucking money-press in the UK.

Get some poxy "Coronation Street" dump, turn it into 6 "affodable" social housing units at about £750 - £800 pound per month rent (which the council/government all but guarantee) and the gaff is paid fot in about 5 years. Printing money after that AND a drum to sell at the end of the day if push comes to shove.

2 years into the first BTL, easy-peasy getting finance for the next one.

I've been putting any spare into premium bonds, the winnings have been the equivalent of my bog standard isa (although not guaranteed) and there is always the chance of a big win. My uncle won £10k a few years ago.

You could always go down the matched betting route. Don't do arbitrge. And don't sign up to profit squad etc. I've made £1000 in 3 months from risk free betting and sign up offers. They've gone now but matched betting blog offer up stuff for free and you can nick a few quid each week for no massive outlay. Won't make you a mill but better returns than an isa
